Dimitri Hegemann, born in 1954, is a German entrepreneur, cultural organizer, label owner, space researcher, and personality in the German music industry. He began his career in the West, studied musicology, worked as a musician, and then ventured into the record industry.

Hegemann made an impressive contribution to the founding of the Berlin Atonal Festival in 1982. He led this event for experimental music until 1991 and thus pushed the boundaries in the Berlin art and music scene. In March 1991, he founded the Tresor Club and the associated label Tresor Records. Both quickly gained recognition and have since become major names in the global nightlife and techno scene.

In 2007, the Tresor Club moved from its original location at the vaults of the former Wertheim department store to the Heizkraftwerk Berlin Mitte. After successive renovations of the building, the Kraftwerk Berlin opened its doors in 2010 to showcase an industrial cathedral and creative venue for diverse art and music events. The Kraftwerk Berlin also serves as the headquarters of the Tresor Foundation Berlin, which Hegemann founded in 2021 to achieve its non-profit goals of promoting and preserving cultural projects while protecting them from speculation worldwide. Other initiatives founded by Hegemann include Happy Locals e.V., a network for promoting cultural developments in rural areas, and the Neuenkircher Verein Berlin Worx.

His current research focuses on the question of whether clubs can strengthen democracy. To ensure the clubs are well-curated, he founded the “Academy of Subcultural Understanding.” This institution offers a 12-week training program where seven young enthusiasts from various small towns learn everything about how to establish and run a venue. https://academy.tresor.foundation/

With his unconventional ideas, progressive formats, and bold investments, Hegemann has secured a firm place in the international music and cultural scene and has influenced projects, artists, and policymakers worldwide.
