Charlie is an Architect, Tutor and PhD researcher at the Manchester School of Architecture. Working with the Leverhulme Unit for the Design of Cities of the Future, Charlie’s doctoral thesis explores the social and cultural value of club culture in cities and addresses the inherent tension between urban regeneration and noise. Based between Manchester and Berlin, he examines both as comparative studies of post-industrial cities where the sound has played a key role in stimulating regeneration, while opposition to noise has led to the closure of club spaces.
Passionate about sound, his work brings together the disciplines of Architecture/Urban Design with Acoustics/Sound Design to explore the subjective nature of noise; advocating that club culture should be integrated from an early stage in urban planning.
