Catarina is a Psychiatry resident based in Lisbon. She is passionate about working with people who use drugs, as well as people of diverse cultures, genders, and sexualities. Catarina completed immersive training on substance use disorders in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she witnessed how socioeconomic inequality and trauma can affect drug use. This experience shaped Catarina’s holistic approach to substances in her clinical practice.
Since 2016, she has collaborated with several harm reduction organizations, in a wide range of settings. These include NGO GAT - IN Mouraria, a community center for people who use drugs in Lisbon, where she offered psychiatric counseling appointments. She partners with Kosmicare to provide harm reduction strategies and psychological support at music festivals in Portugal, including Boom Festival. She also collaborates at Raver’s Care Corner, a community-led awareness and harm reduction intervention housed in a queer, sex-positive club in Lisbon.
Moreover, the therapeutical use of psychoactive substances and associated ritual practices are among Catarina’s principal areas of research interest.
